PRICE FIELDNOTES / PRICE INTELLIGENCE

A practical checklist for competitor price monitoring

Define coverage, comparison rules and a useful response before collecting more prices.

Competitor monitoring becomes useful when a pricing team knows which observations should influence a decision. Start with the commercial question, then choose the coverage and process needed to answer it.

Start with the decision you want to make

Are you checking your position on key items, reviewing a category or investigating an unexpected competitor move? Each question can require a different product set and level of detail.

Write down the decision owner and the action that could follow. If nobody can explain how an observation will be used, more frequent collection alone is unlikely to fix the problem.

Choose a relevant competitive set

The largest competitor is not always the most useful comparison for every category. Select sources your customers actually consider, in the markets where the comparison matters.

  • Define the countries and competitor sources in scope.
  • Select a representative product set, including difficult matches.
  • Agree the collection frequency your decision process needs.
  • Record whether availability and promotional context affect the comparison.

Make products comparable

Check product identifiers, pack sizes, specifications and variants before interpreting price gaps. Distinguish an equivalent item from a similar product or an alternative.

A price difference between non-equivalent products may reflect a genuine difference in the offer. Carry the match relationship into the review instead of collapsing every observation into one competitor number.

Agree a response policy

Decide which market movements require investigation and which should flow into the normal pricing review. A competitor reduction need not imply an automatic reduction of your own.

Check proposed changes against the relevant margin objectives. Confirm who reviews exceptions and how an approved output reaches your commerce or internal systems.

Review usefulness, not just coverage

After an initial period, assess whether the observations answered the original questions. Review missing sources, questionable matches and decisions that still required manual investigation.

PRICE connects daily competitor collection, product matching and margin checks. A demo is an opportunity to evaluate that workflow against your own catalogue and competitive set.
